A device for cooling a reactor pressure vessel of a boiling water reactor comprises a differential pressure measuring tube (8) with sides (8A, 8B) arranged outside of the pressure vessel and connected above the critical filling level height; and a measuring unit (18) for acquiring a differential pressure between the tube sides so that the pressure vessel is cooled on exceeding a triggering differential pressure. The first tube side (8A) is connected to the inner chamber of the pressure vessel at the height of the critical filling level. An Independent claim is also included for cooling a reactor pressure vessel of a boiling water reactor. Preferred Features: The first tube side is surrounded by a jacket tube (12) in the lower region close to the critical filling level.
