The exhaust gas turbine (4) has an electric motor (5) to assist it. Cooled supercharged air drawn from the downstream of the air cooler (8) through a valve (10) cools the motor. The difference between the set value for the supercharged air pressure and the actual value (measured by a sensor (11)), and the turbine speed together with reference to a family of operating characteristics determines when the motor is started. A temperature sensor (16) monitors motor temperature to control the supply of cooling air.
