To give a hot compacting action to particles (5) with a metal content e.g. sponge iron, foundry dust and residue etc., the particles are fed to a roller press (1) to form a coherent strip plate (7). The material is reduced to a granulate (12) by breaking down the strip plate. The particles pass through the roller press at a temperature of 450-900 deg C and preferably 600-700 deg C.
