The lifting device has a first tubular element (1) fitting into an end of a second tubular element which has means for enclosing a horizontal bar of the tent roof at one end and means for clamping the first tubular element at the other. Further means such as two handles are provided to raise the second tubular element. Independent claim describes method for erecting tents by covering the tent roof with a canvas, fitting tent posts to the tent roof, attaching the lifting device and raising up the structure.
