Method in which a partial region, e.g. the P-wave region, of an ECG signal is used to form one or more signal templates. An actual heart beat signal is compared with the templates and correlation coefficients determined. The correlation coefficients are subject to a statistical test the results of which are probabilities for certain conditions. The invention also relates to a corresponding device.
