Catalyst contains gold on a support. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the production of the catalyst comprising treating pyrogenically produced metal oxide, metalloid oxide and/or a mixed oxide using an aqueous gold salt solution adjusted to a pH of the isoelectric neutral point of the metal oxide, metalloid oxide and/or a mixed oxide, drying and calcining at 200-400 deg C in air, inert gas or forming gas. Preferred Features: The support is a pyrogenically produced metal oxide, metalloid oxide and/or a mixed oxide.
