In a module (5) the driver's power requirements, (engine output, power supply to electrical equipment including air conditioning) are processed to derive the desired mechanical, electrical and thermal powers (Pm soll,Pe soll,Pt soll). A module (2) measures the actual outputs (y) of the vehicle mechanical and electrical units (1) to provide the combined actual power outputs (x) of the units. From the desired power requirements and the actual power outputs optimum power outputs (xopt) are calculated to meet a demand for a change in power (xsoll) required, which may be called for by the driver.
