The operation starts from a reference location of the laser beam. This corresponds to a processing position of the beam when operating on a workpiece. A region of error is determined, in which permissible excursions may take place. It is subsequently determined whether the beam lies within this region. Should it stray beyond this region, it is interrupted. An Independent claim is included for corresponding apparatus.
