A photographic material has a layer containing a silver bromideiodide or a silver bromidechlorideiodide emulsion of iodide content at least 0.5 mol.%, the layer also containing a long-chain xanthate and the emulsion being ripened with a sulfur-, selenium or tellurium ripener free of the xanthate. A photographic material has a layer containing a silver bromideiodide or a silver bromidechlorideiodide emulsion of iodide content at least 0.5 mol.%, the layer also containing a long-chain xanthate of formula R'-(-O-C(=S)-S-)n Mm (I) and the emulsion being ripened with a sulfur-, selenium or tellurium ripener free of the xanthate. R1 = optionally substituted alkyl or alkylene of at least 4C; n = 1 or 2; M = a counterion; and m = a value appropriate to the uncharged compound.
