The optical system has an optical scanner (1) and several sensor units (2,20) arranged at different positions in/on a motor vehicle. A measurement unit (11) generates an optical transmission signal (111) as the basis of the optical transmission radiation (23) and for detection of an optical reception signal. A control unit (12) evaluates a certain reflection object in the observation zone on the basis of a transfer time measurement of the reflection signal. An opto-mechanical scanning unit (13) deflects the optical transmission signal (111) and the optical reception signal (112) and selecting one of the sensor unit (2,20).
