A control table (CS) with a number of place holders (PH) and three variables (la,lf,lu) is provided for writing sectors (S) in the buffer memory and for retrieving sectors form the buffer memory. The place holders point using an index (next) to the following place holder in a single endless chain of place holders, the following place holder being divided into three regions (AS,FS, and US) for which an insertion point into one of the regions is flagged.
