A light source (5) emits light along a first axis (OA1) at right angles to the connection direction of the parts (3,4) to be connected, such as optical fibers. A detector (6) is aligned with a second optical axis (OA2). The two optical axes are arranged at an angle of less than 90 degrees to each other, so that light emitted from the light source is reflected by the parts to be connected at the connection point (V), in the direction of the detector. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a splicing apparatus; and (2) a method of positioning parts to be connected.
