The method involves changing the engine between two modes, the second mode involving a richer mixture, depending on defined engine operating conditions. The ratio of an air mass corresponding to a defined lambda value (Lreg) to an air mass defined for the first mode is determined using a first relationship (46) for constant engine torque. A desired lambda value (Lsoll) is derived and taken into account when determining the desired fuel quantity (ME,soll) to be fed to the combustion chamber. Independent claims are also included for the following: a computer program for implementing the inventive method, a control and/or regulation device for operating an internal combustion engine and an internal combustion engine.
