The method involves changing the engine between two modes, the second mode involving a richer mixture, depending on defined engine operating conditions. The ratio of an air mass corresponding to a defined lambda value (Lreg) to an air mass defined for the first mode is determined using a first relationship (46) for constant engine torque. A desired lambda value (Lsoll) is derived and taken into account when determining the desired fuel quantity (ME,soll) to be fed to the combustion chamber.
