A method for multi-protocol transmission of data packets, involves receiving at least one reception data packet which contains header data (H) and useful data (N), identifying the data packet type of the received data packet, separating at least the header address data contained in the received data packet and generating an expanded descriptor for the received data packet. The expanded descriptor gives the recognized data packet type. The useful data is temporarily stored and the generated expanded descriptor is stored in a uniform descriptor store (8). At least the header address data (HA), which is contained in the temporary stored descriptor, is processed and the modified header data (H') and the associated useful data (N) is combined to one transmission data packet which is then transmitted (sent). An Independent claim is given for a multi-protocol router for relaying data packets.
