An agent for detecting fats or fat-like materials comprises an aqueous acid solution of an anthraquinone dye. Independent claims are also included for: (i) detection of fats or fat-like materials by contact with an aqueous acid solution of an anthraquinone dye, followed by optical color determination; and (ii) a test kit comprising the solution and an absorbent carrier.
