Cyclohexenonyl or pyrazolyl 2-(hydrocarbyl-(thio, sulfinyl or sulfonyl)-methyl)-phenyl ketones (I) are new. Cyclohexenonyl- or pyrazolyl-phenyl ketones of formula (I) are new. n = 0-2; R = alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, aryl or aralkyl (all optionally substituted (os)); X = H, NO2, CN, COOH, CONH2, CSNH2 or halo; or alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, alkylsulfinyl, alkylsulfonyl, mono- or dialkylamino or dialkylaminosulfonyl (all os); Z' = cyclohexenonyl or pyrazolyl group of formula (i) or (ii); m = 0-6; R1 = H or halo; or alkyl, alkylthio or aryl (all os); or if m = 2 or more two R2 groups may together form O or alkylene; R2 = OH, OCHO or halo; or alkoxy, alkylthio, alkylsulfinyl, alkylsulfonyl, alkylcarbonyloxy, alkoxycarbonyloxy, alkylaminocarbonyloxy, alkylsulfonyloxy, alkenyloxy, alkynyloxy, aryloxy, arylthio, arylsulfinyl, arylsulfonyl, arylcarbonyloxy, arylcarbonylalkoxy, arylsulfonyloxy, aralkoxy, aralkylthio, aralkylsulfinyl or aralkylsulfonyl (all os); R3 = H, CN, CONH2, CSNH2 or halo; or alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, alkylsulfinyl, alkylsulfonyl, alkoxycarbonyl or cycloalkyl (all os); R4 = H; or alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, aryl or aralkyl (all os); and R5 = OH or OCHO; or alkoxy, alkylcarbonyloxy, alkoxycarbonyloxy, alkylaminocarbonyloxy, alkylsulfonyloxy, alkenyloxy, alkynyloxy, aralkyloxy, arylcarbonyloxy, arylcarbonylalkoxy or arylsulfonyloxy (all os). Independent claims are also included for: (1) the preparation of (I); and (2) new benzoic acid derivative intermediates of formula (IIA). Q' = H or R6; and R6 = 1-6C alkyl, benzyl or allyl.
