The milling cutter (1) is tubular and rotates at up to 5000 rpm, with a cutting speed of 1000 m/min. It contacts the workpiece with its axis at 90 degrees to that of the workpiece. The workpiece may be a continuously-advancing tube or rod. The cutter has a flat end (6) and has 5 rows of staggered cutter teeth (5). The teeth may be trapezoidal in cross-section and their long axes lie parallel with the axis of the tool. There is a slot (4) in front of each tooth, extending beyond the ends of the tooth. Each row contains 12 teeth.
