A loss in weight analytical technique for measurement of cellulose content comprises: weighing aliquot of dried, milled sample, adding perchloric acid to the sample contained in a flask, leaving the mixture to stand for 2 hours before diluting with water, and filtering through a polycarbonate filter, and drying the residue to constant weight. A loss in weight analytical technique for measurement of cellulose content comprises: weighing a 0.5-1.0 g aliquot of dried, milled sample, adding 20 ml 70% w/w perchloric acid to the sample contained in a flask, leaving the mixture to stand for 2 hours at room temperature, before diluting with water, and filtering through a 0.4 micron porosity, polycarbonate filter, and drying the residue to constant weight (24 hours 65-70 degrees C). The weight loss represents the cellulose content, plus any mineral which may be present e.g. as paper filler.
