A triple quadrupole mass spectrometer is used to analyze mixtures of substances which have been ionized. In the first quadrupole, a mass/charge quotient is selected of an ion developed by the ionizing. The selected ion is fragmented by an acceleration voltage in the next quadrupole, acting as a collision chamber filled with a collision gas. A mass/charge quotient is selected of an ion formed by the fragmentation in a further quadrupole. The three stages are performed at least once. The mass charge quotients of all the ions formed by ionizing are analyzed, where the second quadrupole is filled with a collision gas without an acceleration voltage. The stages can be executed in a reverse order.
