Paint/fluid application roller with coat smoothing device has roll-stop ratchet mechanism to switch roller between paint take-up/application positioned and blocked position to smooth applied coat

The paint/fluid applicator has an application roller (1,2) with a roll-stop mechanism, which can be switched-on/off dependent upon demand and/or applied material. The mechanism switches the roller between free running operation for take-up and application of paint, and a blocked position. In this position, the roller is moved by hand to smooth the paint coat already applied, with an action similar to a brush, etc. The mechanism is similar to a ratchet mechanism, with parts integrated in the roller, the roller shaft (1.7) resp. the roller bracket (2.2). There is a toothed ratchet (2.1) on the roller, and a flexible ratchet tongue (2.3) locks from the bracket into the toothing. Both parts can be dis/engaged easily for removal/re-fitting of the roller. The mechanism may have manual control, or mechanical and/or electronic control.
