The smoke and fume extraction system (1) for a tunnel (2), and especially a road tunnel, has at least one eddy hood (4,5) and a spray system (17) with at least one jet (18). The jet is placed at or in the eddy hood to generate a spray mist (32), aligned against or across the suction flow (33) into the hood. The jet is structured to spray fluid droplets with a mean diameter of at most100 mum and preferably at most10 mum. The hoods are aligned along the tunnel, next to each other, with their suction openings away from each other.
