Method for control of a component (Akt1) of a distributed safety-related system, whereby the component is controlled by a process computer (Pro1) that is assigned to it. The computer is connected to a communications system (K1) via a communications controller (S1). An independent monitoring unit is provided for monitoring the process computer with the role of the monitoring unit optimally fulfilled by the communications controller (S1). An Independent claim is made for a communications controller for connection of a process computer to a communications system, whereby the controller also serves to check the operation of the process computer by instigation of a question and answer session with it.
