Electrical resistance heating of a metal workpiece (4) uses electrodes (5, 5a-5e). In the case of a workpiece having a non-uniform cross-section over its length, the regions having a smaller cross-section (q) relative to the other regions are bridged during initial pre-heating so that they are only slightly heated if at all. The regions of the workpiece having a larger cross-section (Q) relative to the other regions are pre-heated to a defined temperature level before the entire workpiece is heated. Independent claims are also included for an alternative process, and for a device for carrying out the process.
