A signal source (26) generates an excitation signal which is fed to the signal input of the system. An error system (29) is connected to the signal input and the signal output, and generates an error output indicative of the instantaneous noise and distortion in the transmitted signal at the output. An evaluation system receives the error output, and outputs a signal indicative of the quality and characteristics of the system. The error system includes a model system whose transfer characteristics can be altered by the parameter P at a parameter input. An estimator (34) estimates the parameter and supplies it to the model system. An Independent claim is also included for a method of measuring, evaluating and noise-recognition.
