Method for determining motor vehicle velocity in which a first velocity (v1) is measured based on the wheel rotational velocity and the wheel diameter in the conventional manner using a transfer function. A second velocity (v2) is determined by making distance measurements to a reference point of landmark at regular intervals and then determining the vehicle's velocity relative to the landmark. The second velocity value is used to apply a correction to the transfer functions so that the error pertaining to the first velocity value is minimized.
