During a component's operation, data is collected in the form of parameters for the effects of related damage during the operation of a component. An on-load collective is determined as a decisive influencing variable to prove operating consistency of the component, in order to determine a likely failure. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a ROM/RAM/flash memory element for controlling a motor vehicle function executed by a component; (2) and for a control device for controlling a motor vehicle function executed by a component.
