The method involves controlling an electric motor for driving the steering shaft depending on vehicle state parameters and operating parameters by a control and regulation unit generating a phase current, whereby either a drive torque or a braking torque is produced in the drive motor. If a defined threshold revolution rate is exceeded by the motor the phase current is generated as a braking current and limited to a maximum value.
