Operating a broadband lambda probe (10), for determining the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas of an I.C. engine operated with a fuel-air mixture, involves repeatedly changing the poles of a pump voltage (UP) over the duration of a fuel injection step in the lean operation of the engine (31) and/or during the heating up phase of the lambda probe.
