The color liquid crystal display has a matrix of liquid crystal cells, each 3 adjacent cells (10,11,12) provided with red, green and blue filters and controlled by red, green and blue image point information (R,G,B), with a rear illumination device (13) switched between a bright daytime light level and a low night-time light level. The control device (15) for the liquid crystal cells allows the cells provided with red filters to be switched off during night-time operation.
