The test system has a laser (2) producing broadband pulses (3) which are fed to a variable phase modulator which receives feedback signals (10) from a control circuit (8). The modulated signals are fed through a test length of optical cable (1). The dispersed signals from the cable pass through a fixed phase modulation unit (2). The modified optical signals (6) pass to an optical detector (7) sending electronic signals (9) to the control circuit. A variety of different test layouts may be used.
