The method involves applying a test rod to a brake pressure generator, causing braking pressure in the braking system and a wheel brake, opening the outlet valve, returning fluid after opening an inlet valve by driving a pump, measuring or estimating the pressure in the braking system or the pressure difference across the valve to be calibrated, changing the valve over and determining the valve regulating current at the start of the changeover. The method involves a diagnostic or calibration process in which a test rod is applied to a brake pressure generator (14), causing braking pressure in the braking system and a wheel brake, opening the outlet valve (9-12) allowing brake fluid to pass into a low pressure tank and pressure in the braking system to decrease, returning the fluid after opening an inlet valve (3-6) by driving a pump, measuring or estimating the pressure in the braking system dependent on operating the pump or the pressure difference across the hydraulic valve to be calibrated, changing the valve over and determining the valve regulating current at the start of the changeover.
