The burner (10) for the combustion of a gas fuel (16) with oxygen generates a hot exhaust gas flow at its outlet (20). The burner is contained within a housing (12), as a porous material, with a fine-pore structure at the inflow zone (22) and a coarse-pore structure at the outflow zone (24). An intermediate zone (30) free of pores is formed between the inflow and outflow zones, during start-up, by sliding the coarse zone to the outflow side to separate them, and then returning to its original position when burning. The housing is composed of two sliding tube sections (26,28), fitted within each other with play. An exhaust gas feedback (32) carries exhaust into the opened pore-free zone.
