The instantaneous nominal idling speed is calculated by an iterative process, starting each time from the preceding operating condition. The determination of nominal idling speed is used in control of the engine, operating with an automatic clutch. The process allows determination of the instantaneous nominal idling speed of the engine of a vehicle fitted with an automatic clutch. The instantaneous nominal idling speed is calculated, each time, as a function of the real idling speed, by reference to a known nominal idling speed in a specific operating condition. The nominal value is calculated by an iterative process, starting each time from the preceding operating condition. The process starts with the nominal idling speed when the engine is cold, and this value is reduced as a function of the real conditions when the engine is operating normally.
