Improved shifting comfort can be achieved by redefining parameters relating to intention to shift (filter offset, time constant), introducing hysteresis and/or only reducing a distance difference if intention to shift can be detected in accordance with a distance difference strategy. The method involves detecting a certain situation, whereby intention to shift disappears before neutral is detected, and responding in an appropriate manner.
