The method involves reducing the engine torque if a slip threshold is exceeded on at least one drive wheel and increasing it again when the slip reduces to below the threshold and involves detecting bends and friction values. On detecting a driving situation in which the vehicle is negotiating a bend on a road with a low friction value the gradient of the torque increase is set lower than for straight ahead travel.
