The thread winder has a tensile strength detector (3) arranged between a thread guide (1) and a traverse apparatus. The detector has a guide portion (4b) to guide a thread (S) to a tensile strength detection position and a holding slit (4a) to hold the thread in the tensile strength detection position. Several thread guides and several detectors are arranged along the axial direction of bobbin holders. Some of the thread guides are movable along the axial direction of the corresponding bobbin holders. Thread passage switching units (2) are provided between the thread guides and the detectors, to switch the passage of thread to the position in which the thread passes through the detector and the position in which the thread does not pass through the detector. A common switching unit is provided for some bobbins.
