Beam formation unit (1) for conversion of a light beam (9) with an anisotropic beam cross section (10) with a small diameter and a large diameter into a beam (12) with an isotropic cross section. The unit comprises beam formation elements (5, 6, 61, 62) as well as a beam deflector (3). The beam forming elements are matched to different anisotropic cross sections, while adjustment of the beam deflector ensures the spatial position of the formed beam is maintained. The invention also relates to a corresponding read-write device comprising an LED laser light source for use with optical storage media.
