Butterbur extract with high content of the spasmolytic agent petasine and low content of pyrrolizidine alkaloids, obtained by extraction with densified carbon dioxide

Production of butterbur (Petasites hybridus; 'Pestwurz') extract (I) with a low content of pyrrolizidine alkaloids involves extracting the herb with densified carbon dioxide then separating the extract by reducing the density of the solvent. An Independent claim is also included for butterbur extract (I) containing up to 40 wt. % petasine and having a pyrrolizidine alkaloid content of 1 ppm or less.
