The production of middle distillates comprises removing only part of the ammonia from the effluent from a hydrotreating zone before passing it through a hydrocracking zone containing a catalyst comprising a Y zeolite, a matrix and a Group VIB and/or VIII metal so that the ammonium nitrogen content in the hydrocracking zone is more than 100 ppm. An Independent claim is also included for a plant for carrying out a one-stage hydrocracking process, comprising: a hydrotreating reactor (2); a separator (5) for removing part of the ammonia from the hydrotreating reactor effluent; a hydrocracking reactor (8); and a distillation column (13).
