The device has a variator (18) with two disc sets (30,33), and a planetary gear set (14). This is located coaxial to the rotary axis of a first disc set, and at least partially within an area, which extends parallel to an adjusting unit (38) for the second disc set (33). At least some of the reverse gear transmission components (45,48,49,50,51) are located within an area, which extends parallel to an adjusting unit (39) of the first disc set (30). Two clutches (20,22) are positioned in the power flux on the side of the variator away from the planetary gear set. In one traveling mode, and with open clutch (20), the second disc set is in drive connection with the main shaft (12) via the clutch, and in another traveling mode and with open clutch, the first disc set is in drive connection with the main shaft.
