The system to clean the cutter (1) of a hair trimmer instrument (2), or a razor, has at least one holder (21,22) to take at least a section of the cutter. A mechanical cleaner (7) is at the holder, to be moved along the cutter and in contact with it. The mechanical cleaner has a base plate (9) which carries brushes (8) with a number of neighboring bristles extending from it. The cleaner is shifted along the cutter with a movement component parallel to the cutting direction and/or a movement component at right angles to the cutting plane.
