The system has a catalyzer (13) state estimator for estimating an oxygen storage quantity immediately before the engine (1) is automatically stopped by the automatic starting and stopping device (30). The injection controller injects fuel to form an air/fuel ratio corresponding to the estimated oxygen storage quantity when the engine is re-started after an automatic stop.
