System and method for universal remote access to diagnostic images and for universal remote display of diagnostic images for service delivery

Systems and methods for providing universal remote access to diagnostic images captured by diagnostic imaging equipment and universal remote display of diagnostic images captured by diagnostic imaging equipment are provided regardless of the identity of the seller who manufactured the equipment. A system comprises a local area network; a scanner capable of sending objects formatted according to a communication protocol, each object having at least one image; and a data acquisition device connected to the local area network and programmed with data acquisition software for acquiring an object originating from the scanner in response to the scanner being determined as a target of diagnosis. This system also includes a communication channel such as a virtual private network to connect the data acquisition device to a central service facility. The preferred communication protocol is DICOM. In response to an instruction from the service center, the data acquisition device on the LAN acquires image files from a malfunctioning scanner and forwards them to the service center for diagnosis.
