The toothed chain has chain bolts (1,2,3) and several longitudinally arranged, laterally adjacent chain links (4,5,6), some of which are formed as toothed links (5,6) and at least one (4) connects two chain bolts (1,2) to one another. Between two adjacent links (4) a free chain bolt (2) is provided in the plane of the link. Crossways to the chain longitudinal direction, the chain links are displaced step-wise. The toothed chain is formed symmetrically to its longitudinal direction, so that the outer chain links (4) locate on the same chain bolts (1,2). The outer chain links are connected non-rotatably with the chain bolts, preferably by pressing. The inner chain links (5,6) are freely rotatable located on the chain bolts (1,2) pressed with the outer chain links (4).
