Pyrotechnic impact protection bag for motor vehicle produces instantly hardening foam to enlarge crumple zone on triggering

A pyrotechnic impact protection bag (7) becomes filled with and instantly hardening foam when triggered by ignition generated by a sensor (12) and generating unit (1,3,5). The crumple zone is thus increased in extent directly before or during the impact. A pyrotechnic impact protection bag comprises and impulse-giving, e.g., infrared, sensor (12) and triggering unit (11) connected to an ignition tablet (1) filled with a highly ignitable charge (2) in a fireproof chamber connected by a combustible membrane or small opening to a fireproof chamber filled with solid propellant (3). There is an opening to a further fireproof chamber (5) containing a fluid gas-foam mixture, which instantly foam-hardens on ignition and fill the protection bag (7). This bag is in the impact or side body regions so that the crumple zone is increased directly before the impact.
