A chemical or biological process treats effluent air or water on a granular substrate bearing microbiological growth. The substrate is especially granules of hard magnetic ferrite, or a mixture of these ferrites with minerals and/or glass-like components, such that the changing electromagnetic fields or wandering magnetic fields may be manipulated during the process. The pore volume is preferably 200-1200 mm/g. The substrate surface is modified by a catalytic agent which promotes both biological and chemical break-down of impurities. Also claimed is a reactor in which the magnetic fields on the substrate panels are manipulated throughout the reactor by a removable magnetic stimulation assembly.
