An adder is connected to a first antenna adding the signals produced by spreading a first pilot or data symbol pattern with two orthogonal codes. A second adder connected to a second antenna adds the first and third spread signals produced by spreading a first inverted symbol pattern resulting from inverting the phase of the first symbol pattern with the second orthogonal code. A third adder connected to a third antenna adds the fourth and fifth spread signals, and a fourth adder connected to a fourth antenna adds the fourth and sixth spread signals. Independent claims are included for : (1) a method of transmitting a signal in a universal mobile telecommunications system terrestrial radio access network; (2) a mobile station; and (3) a method of receiving a signal in a mobile station.
