The heat exchanger fluid consists of at least 50 per cent and preferably 80 per cent by volume of vegetable oil, and may consist entirely of vegetable oil. The fluid has an evaporation temperature of preferably over 200 deg C. The fluid remains liquid down to a temperature of at least minus 20 deg C. The vegetable oil may consist of rape oil, sunflower oil, palm oil or soya oil, or a mixture of these. Independent claims are included for an internal combustion engine which contains the proposed heat exchanger fluid in its cooling circuit, and for a cooling system for buildings which also utilizes the aforesaid fluid.
