The device is, or is formed by, a helical tube (2) with a scavenging fluid supply connection (12), and a section (4) with wire (5) passing through. It also has a unit with dispensing apertures (10), which extends along a helical path around the section so as to face that section. The apertures are distributed along the path, and at least one is circular and one is slot-shaped. The scavenging fluid is directed mainly at right angles to the longitudinal direction of the wire.
