The discharge vessel has a central piece (4), which defines the inner volume for a light emitting charge and consists of one, two or three pieces. The ends of the central piece are provided as integral, longitudinal stopper ends (5) at the adjacent part of the discharge vessel. Openings at the ends provide gas proof electrical lead-through, connected electrically with two electrodes. A transition area (8) between the central piece and the stopper ends has a smooth inner contour and a defined radius. An independent claim is also provided for a metal halide lamp.
